Old but Good

Good afternoon!

Hope everyone is having a lovely salad Saturday. Gosh, I really am in a salad phase, it’s on my mind 24-7!

This morning’s breakfast consisted of an oldie but goodie cereal, Shredded Wheat. Made from 100% natural whole grain wheat, it has 6 grams of fiber and protein for each 170 calorie 1-cup serving.

Its a plain cereal so it works great as a base with added toppings! Today I put in:

  • banana slices
  • craisins
  • macadamia nuts
  • almond milk
  • Artisana coconut butter

Then I went downstairs for my weekly mother-daughter workout. I did 45 minutes on the stationary bike, followed by 15 minutes of abs while Mom walked on the treadmill. I had burned 367 calories by the end and wanted to go for an even 400.

I went outside and did 5 minutes of alternating jump rope and jumping jacks, ending with a few seconds of high knees. It was a fun mini workout and when I ended my calorie burn was at 401! Perfect :) Who says you need a gym membership for a good, varied workout?

Lunch was a variation of theĀ  Harvest Salad from my Betty Crocker Whole Grains cookbook.

It included craisins, apples, corn, carrots, and barley. I opened what I thought was a can of corn, not noticing it was creamed corn so it was a very creamy, sweet salad!

With an iced hazelnut coffee.

The plan for today is to pack for Aruba, one week from today I’ll be on my way there! Mom and I are going on a shopping day Wednesday to get some last minute vacay clothes and I just found out there’s a Whole Foods next to the mall we’re going to. SO EXCITED! I haven’t been to one since Pittsburgh 2 months ago. Anddd, even more exciting, I think it’s a new one!

Now I’m going to go spend some time sunning on the deck with my new friend

I think he’s a North American tree frog or something because he has really sticky feet! Like me, I think he’s waiting for our pool to open. Sorry frog, 2 more weeks!

See you all later :)

everything’s bigger at the movies

Wow, I cannot believe it’s almost noon already! Today is going by lightning fast.

I came home this morning to the cutest set up. I was telling my Mom about the blog the other night and she went out and bought me a new dish and placemat for my food pictures :) She had it all set out on the counter for me, ready to be used! Breakfast on a dish ruled out oatmeal (it’s too warm out today anyways) so I made pancakes. I feel like I haven’t had them in ages!

I used Hodgson Mill’s whole wheat buttermilk pancake mix. It called for a tbsp of oil but I healthified it and used applesauce instead. I can never tell the difference! They’d probably be a bit moister with oil but with all my toppings, it doesn’t matter.

The pancakes themselves were really good. The whole wheat gave them a gritty texture which I liked. I put strawberries and pecans in the mix and then topped it off with banana slices, more strawberries, a tbsp of Artisana coconut butter, and a tsp of honey.

After the pancakes I went downstairs and did an interval workout on the stationary bike. The stats:

9.4 miles

45 minutes

370 calories burned

143 avg heart rate

I’ve been thinking a lot about my workouts lately and since I’ve been doing such a great job in keeping up with them at home, I feel I should sign up for a race so that I’m working towards something. I’ve said it before, but I’m really interested in doing a sprint triathlon, especially since I’ve been biking so much. I’m going to look more into training schedules later on today! I’m also going to look into half marathons.

The only reason I’ve been postponing signing up for something is because I have no one to do it with. None of my friends are into being active or anything like that. When you do races, do you do them with friends or are you comfortable to just go at it alone? I think I have to get over my fear of being alone since it’s obviously holding me back!

As I’m writing this my bath towel is still wrapped around my hair and I think it’s almost dry so I better go get to the blow dryer and finish getting ready! I planned a fun day at the mall for the boyfriend and I. We’re going to go over to Dave & Buster’s for lunch (neither of us has ever been!) and games (I’m feeling a little basketball competition), do a little shopping (I have stuff to return), and then go to a movie. Speaking of the movies, here are some stats compliments of this month’s Fitness magazine:

66 percentage of moviegoers who buy something from the concession stand

1,220 calories in a large movie-theater popcorn with butter

482 calories in a soft pretzel

75 cents price difference between a large and jumbo popcorn

420 calorie difference between a large and jumbo popcorn

3.7 size in ounces of a Snickers at the movies (a regular bar is 2 ounces)

I’m bringing my own snacks this time, although I won’t deny that I’ve eaten my fair share of movie-theater popcorn in the past :) Do you bring your own snacks to the movies?

On repeat

Good morning!

Due to the late lunch situation yesterday, and the fact that today is going to be basically a repeat of yesterday, I made sure to make an ultra filling breakfast! I returned to my good friend wheat bran after a little hiatus :) I can tell I’m going to be full for a while already!

sdc11257I also spent quite a bit of time making it pretty. I don’t know why though because it’s one of the only mornings where I’m going to be rushed for time and I end up spending 40 minutes making breakfast! I enjoyed eating it though :)

In the mix:

  • 1/4 c. steel cut oats
  • 1/2 c. almond milk, 1/2 c. water
  • 1/4 c. wheat bran
  • 1/2 small banana
  • 2 strawberries diced and then 2 more sliced for topping
  • tsp flax
  • peanuts
  • tbsp Artisana coconut butter

sdc11262Heavenly!

I’m bringing my lunch today so I have to go and get it together. My sprouts are ready (only 3 days later!!) so I’m excited to try them out. I’m also bringing a Luna bar in case I have to take such a late lunch again thanks to everyone’s recommendations :)

I already got my workout in too, 40 minutes on the stationary bike and then 15 minutes of abs for a total calorie burn of 449. Starting the day with a workout always sets a good tone for the rest of the day for me.

Are you a morning or evening exerciser? I’m a morning girl all the way!

Trivia Tuesday – True or False: Sorbet and sherbet are two names for the same dessert.

I always wondered about this, see you after work with the answer!
