Aruba Part 2

Most of last week was spent at the beach

hpim1592

- with equal parts reading and swimming, so I did get some exercise!

hpim1316

I could spend my life on a beach, it’s so relaxing! The beaches in Aruba all have beautiful white sand and turquoise water. A pretty cool thing about our beach, Eagle beach, was that it was a nesting ground for sea turtles.

aruba-one-130

There was tons of cautioned off squares where sea turtles had laid eggs. It would have been amazing to see them hatch! While we weren’t that lucky, I did see a sea turtle while snorkeling. He was so cute, just swimming along lazily. This is where an underwater camera would have come in handy!

hpim1514

On that snorkeling adventure I also saw a sunken WW2 ship, a starfish, a sand dollar, squid, and tons of colorful fishies. Snorkeling is always my favorite beach vacation activity and my Dad finally agreed to take scuba diving lessons with me before our next vacay. I can’t wait!

Some other active things we did during the week:

hpim1468Cave exploring, complete with bats.

Windy desert hikes…

hpim1481

Complete with wild donkeys…

And ending on the beautiful coast.

As for my eating habits for the week, we ended up usually going out to eat forĀ  a big breakfast, having something small for lunch, and then going out at night for a big dinner and occasionally dessert, with no snacking in between.

Breakfast # 1: Windie’s Aqua Cafe

aruba-one-101

A small watersports shop next to our resort owned by a Dutch family. Windie herself cooked us breakfast! She must have thought since we were Americans we were used to a really large amount of food.

aruba-one-175

Eggs, bread, pancakes, fruit cocktail, yogurt, and coffee.

Breakfast # 2: The Dutch Pancakehouse

aruba-one-100

aruba-one-051

This place was next to the Plaza Cafe, where we went to dinner one night, and being the breakfast fanatic that I am, I knew instantly we needed to try it. Everyone had their doubts when the menu consisted soley of crepes but they seriously had like 40 different varieties! They also were actually Dutch pancakes, not crepes, but they wrote that so Americans didn’t think they were American pancakes.

aruba-one-169

My triple berry Dutch pancake was amazing, and so was everyone elses. It was like dessert for breakfast!

Breakfast # 3: The Waterfront Crabhouse

aruba-one-025

We came here when we couldn’t find anywhere else open for breakfast. I couldn’t decided between eggs or pancakes so I ordered both and split the pancakes with my Dad.

What would I do without him?! Is there anyone in your family with the same eating habits?

That’s the end to my Aruba trip posts. Hope you enjoyed them :) It’s back to work today but I’ll be back to the normal daily eats posts either tonight or tomorrow!

Arubian Nights

Bon Bini!

Which means ‘Welcome’ in the Aruban language. I’ll pretend it means welcome back :)

I got in late last night after my flight came in an hour late. I guess there was a different delayed flight coming in so we had to circle the plane around the airport 4 times before landing. Argh! It was okay though because I got to watch Coraline, which I’d been wanting to see, and finish Naturally Thin by Bethenny Frankel.

I have ALOT of food to show you guys! For today I’ll stick with dinners. First, I just want to say that Aruba is wonderful! The people are friendly and it never rains there. It was so nice to not have to check the weather! It is awfully windy though, I’d call it the windy island rather than the happy island. There’s also a huge Dutch influence on the Island, since it’s owned by the Netherlands, which I loved. My dream vacation is to go to Europe so whenever I can get somewhat close to that experience I take it.

After the first night of liquid dinner, we went out to eat each and every night. That’s one of the things I love about vacay! Right now I feel like I could not eat out for the next 4 months and I’d be content.

Dinner one: The Plaza Cafe

aruba-one-022

aruba-one-092

This was our most pleasant surprise restaurant of the trip. One of our favs and we had just stumbled upon it while looking for a place to eat.

aruba-one-042

Tuna steak with a sweet soy sauce.

aruba-one-185

Salad, with pickles! I didn’t use the salad dressing, whatever that was, and instead just asked for vinegar.

Dinner Two: Smokey Joe’s

aruba-one-170Our least favorite. We walked around for about an hour looking at a million different menus before finally giving up and going to the next place we saw. One thing about Aruba – food is very expensive! An entree was over 20 dollars no matter where we went.

aruba-one-145

I ordered grilled Mahi Mahi with rice/beans and corn on the cob. It came with 3 dipping sauces – creole, jamaican jerk, and garlic butter. I never had Jamaican jerk anything and I loved it!

Dinner Three: The Suisse Chalet

aruba-one-179

aruba-one-031

Named one of the top 10 restaurants in Aruba, we took my uncle out here in celebration of his 50th birthday. We got there in time for the early bird special and had a 3 course meal, which began at the bar.

aruba-one-006

Cranberry with vodka

aruba-one-081Salad.

aruba-one-056Piece of garlic bread.

aruba-one-129

Red snapper with veggies and potatoes. There was also Creole dipping sauce on the side.

aruba-one-154

Dessert was ‘hot kisses’, vanilla ice cream with a warm raspberry sauce, with coffee.

Dinner Four: Rumba Bar & Grill

aruba-one-115

This was a place I found which turned out to be great. I’d call it one of Aruba’s best kept secrets :) It was tiny but good!

aruba-one-189

Garlic shrimp with veggies and white rice.

aruba-one-119

How cute is the chocolate mousse? I split this with my dad. One mouse each!

Dinner Five: Pinchos Grill & Bar

aruba-one-113

For our last night on the island, we went to Pinchos Bar and Grill, which was on a pier on the water. According to them, one of the seasons of the Bachelor filmed a dinner here. It was very cool to eat on the water!

aruba-one-009

We all started with a salsa bean salad. It was black & red beans, corn, peppers, tomatoes, pineapple, and balsamic vinegrette. I’ll definitely be recreating it!

aruba-one-108

Orange glazed grilled salmon with roasted veggies and coconut rice. I love coconut rice!

aruba-one-182

Split this slice of carrot cake with Dad.

Ojanestad

I’ll leave you with some pictures of downtown so you get a feel for the place. I have tons of blogs to catch up on today and possibly a trip to the grocery store. Have a great Sunday!!!

Food and Foreigness

Reporting from Aruba since we have wireless :)

We didn’t have time for breakfast before leaving for the airport so I had to pick something out there. I was pleased with the healthy options.

sdc11836

sdc11837

Kashi Golden Brown Maple instant oatmeal with a banana.

We flew Jet Blue, which only offers snacks (unlimited tho!) on board so we brought lunch. Halfway through the flight I had my (pretty soggy but still good) portabella mushroom sandwich, topped with spinach, mozzarella, hummus on an Arnold sandwich thin.

sdc118331

I picked a bag of cashews for my snack when the stewardesses came around and also got served my favorite coffee, Dunkin Donuts (black).

sdc11839

With Runner’s World as reading material. I wasn’t sure if I’d like this magazine but it was great!

After settling into our resort, we went to downtown Oranjestad for dinner and ate at a place called Iguana Joe’s.

sdc11850

sdc11853

I ordered what was supposed to be their best vegetarian option, Joe’s Burrito, with Carribbean style veggies on the side.

sdc11854

It was amazing! I ate about half of the burrito and all the vegetables. Not sure exactly what was in the burrito but I know there was rice, beans, plantains and peppers.

Yesterday morning we went to breakfast at the resort next door called Costa Linda and ate at their “Coffee Shop.”

sdc11858

I ordered the fruit platter with cottage cheese. It was enough fruit to share with all and I ate only one of the little cottage cheese cups.

sdc11861

After breakfast we rented a car and went to a supermarket. We’re staying here through Timeshare so we have a kitchen in our place.

sdc11863

I could seriously stay in this place all day. Two of my favorite things are food and foreigness! A lot of the stuff was in Dutch and everything was really expensive. Like, 9 dollars for most cereals! Here’s what we ended up with:

sdc11864

Wheat bread (or Bruin Brood) from the bakery, coffee, mystery spread (hazelnootpasta, it’s nutella with something white that’s NOT fluff), cornflakes, vanilla soy milk (they didn’t have almond milk), and Balashi beer (the main reason for the shopping trip and brewed right in Aruba).

sdc11869

After spending the rest of the day at the beach reading Naturally Thin and searching for Conch shells…

sdc11870

lunch for me was a hazelnootpasta sandwich (still unsure of the white stuff) while my parents and the boyfriend split the remaining burritos (my Mom had ordered it last night too).

My aunt and uncle are also vacationing here this week but at a different resort so we decided to search them out last night before dinner. We headed over to their place, a massive Marriot resort, and found them at one of the bars on Moomba beach.

sdc11896

It had an awesome beer bottle chandelier! After a generous offering of drinks…sdc11882

and Cuban cigars (my Uncle is the party king, I think we topped off at 48 beers on the tab)

sdc11887

We ended up spending the night partying there and skipping dinner. Tsk tsk! I had 4 beers and although I was planning to go running on the beach right now, I’m feelin a little weak for that before breakfast. Hey, it’s vacation!

Today we’re having another day at the beach. The water is beautiful and blue!
