Foods are grouped into five categories. We must take in foods from all those categories in proper proportions. The first categories mentioned below must be consumed more than the latter ones:

It is recommended that we consume five portions of different kinds of fruits and vegetables in a day. Fruits and vegetables are great sources of minerals and vitamins. Research shows that people eating five portions of fruits and vegetables a day have lower risk of suffering from cancers, stroke, and heart problems.
Starchy foods should occupy almost one-third of our diet. Examples of starchy foods are maize, bread, potatoes, cereals, cornbread, and pasta. They serve as vital source of energy and other nutrients. Moreover, they also fuel our body.
Meat, Eggs, Fish, And Beans
Meat, eggs, fish, and beans supply protein for the repair and growth of our body. They also provide various vitamins and minerals.
Meat is a great source of protein, iron, B vitamins, zinc, and the main source of vitamin B12. Eggs and beans are also good sources of protein. Fish is a significant source of protein and other minerals and vitamins. The oily kind of fishes supplies omega-3 fatty acids.
Milk and dairy foods
Milk and dairy foods like yoghurt and cheese supply protein to the body. They also have calcium, which is great in maintaining the good condition of the bones.
Fat and sugar
Fats and sugar boost energy for the body. However, when we eat more than we burn, we can gain more weight. Therefore, fat and sugar must be consumed in moderation.
We must see to it that we always have a balanced diet whenever we eat. Always try to eat more fruits and vegetables and less fat and sugar. Even if we love to eat a certain kind of food, we must consume variety of foods coming from different categories. However, the amount of food we take must be guided by how important the nutrients are in our body, and how dangerous it is if we also eat too much. For example, fat and sugar can give us more energy, but it can make us obese if we also take in more than what we need. Maintaining a balanced diet will always give us a healthy living.
